Our story-
Long story short- people didn’t want my tomatoes. Ok. Perhaps that’s a little too short. Hi, my name is Dena and I started Petal and Paw Flower Farm in 2022. It all started with my desire to grow a backyard vegetable garden in 2021 to help channel some of the stress of working in healthcare. I grew zucchini, peppers, and you guessed it, tomatoes.. So. Many. Tomatoes. I loved tending my little garden and ended up with baskets of heirloom tomatoes. I went door to door to give them to my neighbors but no one wanted them. Seriously! Even my now-husband didn’t want any. I decided I wanted to grow something everyone would enjoy the following year.
In 2022 I grew tulips. I excitedly went around to my neighbors to present them with flower bouquets and they were overjoyed! They had never seen tulips like the ones I was growing. Neighbors invited me into their homes and shared stories of the impact flowers had on some part of their life; helping in Grandma’s flower garden as a child, or growing up in Holland and seeing the tulip fields. That is when I realized it wasn’t just about flowers- it is the connection flowers bring us. That year Petal and Paw Flower Farm was born to bring more of this kind of connection to Lynchburg through flowers.
So, what about the Paw?
The pup in our logo is our late dog, Lola. She was my ‘biggest helper’ in the garden and always by my side. The day I adopted her, she was scheduled to be euthanized at less than a year old due to overcrowding at a shelter. We had a wonderful ten years together before she crossed the Rainbow Bridge in 2023, and I like to think she is in her forever garden where the sun always shines and everything is blooming. All of our animals have come from local shelters or just showed up on the farm.
Giving back to our community-
We feel it is important to support the amazing organizations caring for homeless pets here in Lynchburg and Campbell County. When you purchase from us, 10% is donated to a local pet shelter. So when you choose to support our family farm YOU are sharing PETALS and saving PAWS.
We Grow as Nature Intended
At Petal and Paw Flower Farm, our favorite time of day is walking through the flower rows in the last hour of daylight as golden light bathes across the flowers. We quietly watch as our flower farm, grown without synthetic pesticides, fills with a melody of bees buzzing and butterflies dancing.
As stewards of this land, it is important to us that we grow flowers as naturally as possible, not only for the sustainability of our environment but also for the safety of those who enjoy our flowers.
